What is the difference between original and pirated textbooks?
An original textbook is produced with the rights holder’s permission. A pirated textbook is reproduced without that permission, sometimes copying the original cover and publishing details.
“Original” does not automatically mean the newest edition. A genuine older edition may still be unsuitable for your course. Likewise, a locally printed or lower-priced edition can be genuine when authorised by the rights holder.
How can you check whether a textbook is genuine?
1. Match the ISBN and edition. Compare the title, author, publisher, edition and format against the publisher’s listing. Check the copyright page as well as the back cover. A matching ISBN helps identify the edition, but copied ISBNs cannot authenticate an individual book.
2. Examine the printing and pages. Look for blurred diagrams, uneven text, missing pages or inconsistent pagination. Compare against a verified copy of the same edition, ideally the same printing. 4. Check any advertised digital access. If the listing includes online resources, confirm what access is supplied and its conditions. A used book may have an already-redeemed code; this alone does not make the printed book counterfeit.
5. Compare the complete purchase. Check the same edition and format, then include delivery charges. Ask why an unusually cheap copy costs less. Discounts, used condition and authorised regional editions can explain legitimate price differences.
